What is a GMT?

Because a number of people have asked me, it would be easier to just make a thread out of this;

GMT is short for General Motors Truck. An internal identifier used for different generations. The numbers signify the series and style of the trucks. This is across all of GM's companies.

GM GMT platform - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My Suburban is a GMT-400 series, and my Silverado is a GMT-800 series.

This is also helpful as far as part interchangealbility. A number of parts (body parts specifically) are only interchangeable in one series.

Good. I hope this clears up a lot of confusion. If you click on the link and read the article, there are sublinks in the article for different versions and subversions. Enjoy!

Numerous little things, but the biggest being the specific model, and the year(s) produced.
