painting help

ended up having to buy a roll bar for the truck. has the mounts for the lights up top but plan on making some alternate mounts for my francis antaneas. got some grinding to do as well. i plan on stripping this thing down to get the junk rattle can paint and other off it and paint it a black to go with the truck. done some research on this and have been advised that if i were to go down to bare metal, i would need a self etching primer. never heard of it. i am not looking for high end paint jobs with this thing but i do want to have the paint stick longer than say your normal Walmart rattle can job will last. please remember that this is not the truck that i am painting but rather this pipe instead. different metal i would imagine. any insight would be greatly appreciated.

after striping , first use metal prep then i use dollar store primer , when dried (and with in the re coat time limit on can) hit it lightly with 320 sand paper , metal prep again then final coat of something . no applause necessary , just send money

Napa carries a decent self-etching primer part#7220. I think it's about 9 dollars for a rattle can. POR-15 makes a self-etcher too. I know as long as your metal is clean, the napa brand is a really nice primer, and like SHD said, hit it with some 320 sandpaper and it will give you a smoothe, even finish to lay paint on.

Napa used to sell a product called triple etch. Dont know if its still available. You wiped it on...waited for it to turn white ... and washed it down with thinner. After which you could use any kind of paint or primer. We used to use it on the GM cowls etc that were galvanised in order to get the paint to stick.

what im looking for is what i need to do to make the paint stick as long as possible. my painting jobs usually last a year or so and then start flaking off. this is what i want to avoid. i do not want this to look like a half you know what job. but i dont need this 500 dollar dupont paint either. would yall recommend that i use the self etching primer or do you think i can get away with only the primer and primer sealer (if needed) for starters??

after stripping if you would rough it up with #220 you wouldn't even need the etching primer , never used it , why your paint probably came off is poor prep before painting . etching primer has only been around for the last few years , wonder what people did before that ?
and your i.o.u's are starting to build up .

on bare metal its better to use some self etching primer first. then scuff it with a scuff pad. then primer over that with any primer you want(a good primer). then sand that with 320 or400. then you sould be ready for paint. if you really want it to stay i would use good paint not a $1 can from dollor general. napa does sell some good paint.

the other idea is to have it powder coated. its tough and durable. and may last longer then the truck.

just my two cents hope it helps out
