S10s & rangers with 4cyl engines

As yall know I am getting ready to Finley get a truck. I keep finding a lot of 4cyl rangers and S10s. Are they any good? I prefer to have a V6. But are the 4 cyl ok for daily use?

really good fuel economy, and i beleive they are the same as in the cavaliers so there are lots of performance stuff available.

Ok. I may check them out then. I was worried they would be under powered for daily driving.

from my experience the S10 gets better milage than the Ranger. Had an 88 S10 & an 88 Ranger both 4's with a stick behind them. best I could get out of the Ranger was 18 when I was getting 27 with the S10.

Back in the early 90's I ran a shop in NYC. One of our fleet accounts was Holmes Protection Services (alarms) and they used mostly Rangers and E-250's. The Rangers all had the 4 cylinder engines with the automatic, and they were getting really horrible mileage before we got the account. Then we started working on them and after about a month I got a call from their vehicle manager asking two questions:
  • How did you get the gas mileage to go from 16 MPG (average) to 25+?
  • Why are you billing us for eight spark plugs on a four cylinder engine?
Yup... Whoever had been doing their service before us had only been changing four plugs, one per cylinder, but those engines use two per cylinder, and the second set of plugs was easy to miss if you didn't know about them... or were clueless. Some of these trucks had 250k miles on them, and the "hidden" plugs were factory originals, or what was left of them.

I know its exciting to gut your first truck, but do yourself a favor and save up to buy what you want, not the first truck you find.
