| Old SUV Recommendations? Hello All- New here and looking for some advice on what kind of truck to get. My trusty old Honda finally died after 240,000 miles, sadly six months before I graduate from nursing school and could afford something nice. I decided I want to get an old truck of some sort to get me through, but I have no idea where to start. I'm in love with old (early 90's) Cherokees but I've heard mixed reviews on them. Basically it's just going to serve as my every day commuter but I also want something that I can take up to the mountains to go boarding this winter. (Not super concerned about gas milage, otherwise I wouldn't be getting a truck at all.) Doesn't have to be fabulous off road but needs to be able to handle bad weather and such. I just want it to last me about a year and my preferred budget is around a couple grand but I could choke on up to 4 or so. (Obviously nothing fancy or done up, just a good ol' basic truck will do.) As for general auto knowledge, I pretty much know where to put the gas and thats about it, so something requiring a lot of repairs/work is going to have me up a creek without a paddle. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! |

| i`d recommend a 96-00 chev tahoe or yukon, cheap to fix and good solid trucks. although they are bigger than a cherokee. similar mileage though.

![]() ![]() ![]() Ok ok I'm j/k... If you're looking to save some coin those little toy pickups are tanks from what I've heard and experienced, they're just a little harder to find it seems. That 22RE will keep ya movin all day. Nothing wrong with the suggested Chebby, just throwing in my alternative 2c.

| i recommend a 00 jeep cherokee sport, with a caviat that the 4.0L is terrible on gas. i had one a while back, went 100,000 miles with no problems at all. great power, excellent offroad capability, comfortable for long trips, and above all fun to drive. most noteworthy, i think, is the organization under the hood. all of your dipsticks and fluid reservoirs are super simple to locate and check. happy hunting!

| I'd recommend a 97-01 Cherokee in a minute. I've had a few of them and they are very reliable. The 4.0 and AT setup is pretty bulletproof. Mileage of 20 on the highway isn't bad at all for an SUV. I easily got 20 highway but only about 15 around town. Mileage will head south if you add bigger tires... |

| I too would recommend the 97-01 jeep cherokee sports...... the 4.0 that came in them was reliable, and pulled about 20 mpg on the highway. Last edited by batty1214; 07-26-2009 at 02:57 PM. Reason: they also can be picked up for about 4500$ or more depending on shape. |

| its the small gas tank that gets ya... 17 gal tank if i remember correctly... 17gal @ 20mpg= 340 miles on a tank. goes by fast! other than that its rock solid, even with the AT. i wish i had one again.

| that 17 gallon tank isn't that small....... my 95 chev only has a 23 gallon tank...... and at 12 mpg, 270ish miles to a tank, I still say that a jeep is a good option......anothern that I thought of would be a toyota four runner, and an older nissan pathfinder..... |
