It'll be standard seven pin I believe.

most use a seven pin round, but the trailer does not have anything hooked to the brake terminal

Most hydraulis systems work of surge, No extra wires, If the trailer pushes forward on the coupler it applies the brakes itself.

Right, but trailers that size usually use the 7 pin because it's the default standard for larger trailers.

there is no need for a 7 pin without the trailer brakes, so a 4 pin wouldn't be out of the question.

No, a four isn't out of the question, but often times trailers large enough to require brakes also have reverse lights or batteries that need charging, and that's done with a seven pin.

Agreed with all, As long as he has a 7 to 4 adapter he will be good to go either way.

also depends on the trailer size. Some of the larger 40' gooseneck, or heavy rated shorter trailers will use electric over hydraulic for the brakes instead of just electric or surge (which only works on bumper pull)

trailer size really doesn't matter on smaller trailers. some could have a 7 pin plug for just brake and turn lights etc.. just depends on how it was wired from the factory or the previous owner...
