The only "rule of thumb" I ever strictly adhere to is...

"Keep 'em out of moving machinery and other dangerous places."

65lbs max I'd run 45lbs in the tire. 85lbs max I run 50-55 depending on empty weight.

My 35's max at 55 and I keep em at 35lbs on the dot... this is with a Crew Cab Longbed Supeduty... Not a light vehicle at all... Makes the ride MUCH smoother... Keep in mind the tire width and rim widthe does play a part as well. I run a 12.5" tire on an 8" rim so the low pressure also helps remove the additional cupping and give me a flatter footprint.

.
Well as I FN found out the tire guys had the new ones at 45lbs EVEN THOUGH I said 65 SO........When I went to drop the rear pressure(older tires) I was at it for a few minutes in between checking. I (as usual) ASSUMED the front(new tires) were the same.

Imagine my confusion when I dropped ALOT of air thinking I'd save time to find me at like 35lbs checked the other new tire YEP 45lbs.

I'm not floating on a cloud of air at 55lbs but it seems a little better.

OF COURSE that could be because ALL 4 TIRES are at the SAME FLIPPIN' pressure!!!

my little nissan is so light, tire wear has yet to be an issue... the 235's that were on it when i bought it were over 5 years old, and still have more than 50% tread on them. the beefy 31's i put on it have yet to show any signs of wear after 1 year, so i run them at 40psi (45max). i have to reinflate them every few weeks, they all leak slowly, but i drive like a grampa so i dont mind sacrificing some driving comfort for better mileage. also, the little 4 cyl tends to struggle to hold cruising speed at lower pressures... at 40psi i have no problem holding speed at 60-70 mph, and can still tackle hills without having to drop to 4th gear.

weight the truck with full fuel, add average amout of weight carries, Go to the tire manufactures site, look up the tire and calculate the needed average air pressure. Of course if you load it heavier you need to increase the pressure.

Have you tried putting in green tire slime? It's much safer than fix a flat.

Despite claims on the package to the contrary, I've found that Slime can and does seriously affect tire balance. Now the only place I use it is in the tires on my wheelbarrows and handtrucks.

If the tires are leaking slowly Lukas, try cleaning the bead seating area on the rim, or asking the tire shop to use a little bead sealer. Also, check your valve stems and cores for leaks with a little soap and water.

I have never been fond of any tire additives. Most are hard on the bead of your wheel, cause wheel rust inside the wheel etc. Then you have issues like Lukas where your tire bead does not seal. Its not the tire, its the wheel from the damage from fix a flat products. Slime, I am unaware of siince I have never used and likely never will. I think I still have a couple steel wheels around that were victims of Fix A Flat type addatives that will not hold air, if I have not trashed them yet. If I still have them, I will post pics when I get a bit of time to do so.

yeah, i had a thread about it a while back, the alloy wheels are so pitted and corroded that the bead surface doesnt seal completely. im in the market for a new set of steel wheels. $220 including the 31's mounted and balanced. i'll most likely paint em a nice flat black.
