| engine squeaks when i turn it off My engine seems to let out a 'squeak' during its last turn when i turn off the ignition. What could this be? anything to worry about? |

| no, nothing when i rev, just that one last turn when i turn it off ill check out the visible belts...are there more belts inside that i won't be able to see? yeah the two up front appear to be in pretty good condition, but i don't know if those are the ones you're talking about |

| yeah those are the only belts. if you rub your fingers over the belts and alot of material comes off then you can get some belt dressing at your local auto store, helps restore the condition of the belts. if every thing checks out then i would look at your alternator, could be a bad bearing making the squealing.

| When you look at the belts, see if you have the serpentine type that have the little ribs on the inside. The little ribs are actually tiny "V" grooves just like the onld V belts of old. When the serpentine gets old the little "Vs" are bottoming in their grooves just as the old V belt would bottom and squeek. Look at the belt, if the tops of the ribs are old and the bottom of the ribs (on the belt) is clean then it is bottoming and needs replacing. Likewise if the grooves are clean or black in the bottom and the tops are rusty, then replace the belt. They get old, dry out, bottom and squeek. Just as Mudseeker said, a belt dressing will help stop the squeek. Unfortunatly if the belt is wore out, then.... If the belt looks ok, check the belt tensioner pulley, the bearings could be going out and giving you the "last" squeek" when you shut down. Hope this helps. |
