follow the wires from the lights to the front.. I bet they're shorting out on the box or frame. shouldn't be a hard fix

i bet its just a loose or corroded connector behind the light assembly, pull it off clean it and put it back on, it should would. if it were a short, it would be blowing a fuse, so i bet it is a loose connector

actually, if the short were after the load (tail light), i believe the lights would still work and not blow a fuse. before the load would be a different story.

Welcome to the forum robert d.
Think you might have read that wrong. Fuse idea was related to before the lamp, so was right.
Grounds going bad on a truck that age is common, so check connector as suggested
but if both sides failing together is more likely the ground to frame at rear of truck.
To be sure that is the problem if you don't see it right away, take off a lamp fixture but don't disconnect wires.
Shake truck to get failure and while bad, use a jumper to a GOOD ground
or check voltage to good ground. Be sure which side of lamp is failing.
