Need some help. 93 F/S Truck. Since I replaced my flywheel I noticed that my starter is making a strange noise what do you guys think should I add a starter shim I have one that came with the starter that I bought many years ago? I have never dealt with something like this before I heard about it but it has never happen to me. Also why does my Magnaflow sound quiter now I guess it could be the first signs of old age I sometimes can't hear myself think. I wonder how these new kids now days are going to hear when they get old there always' using headphones and so on. It's only going to get worst HELP.

I would pull the starter and inspect the gear. I went through a number of them almost immediately after buying my 94 new. All warranty work but a real pain since twice they took the flywheel with them. Problem was gear (or pieces) coming loose.

You didn't say what kind of noise when, so... High pitch whine: 1) when cranking before start - remove shims (yeah I read, not there) 2) when releasing key - add shims (flywheel runout could make it intermittent) Whoop - after start but before key released, sounds kinda like a siren if you rev while still on starter - could be the clutch in the starter. Rumble, growl or knock - after releasing key while starter winds down - could be a bent armature in starter. Shims should be used to get clearance between the ring tooth top and the starter between teeth at bottom of "v" of about 0.5-1.5mm or 0.02-0.06in. Use 1mm shims, max two of them, to both bolts if whine after fire, moving starter away. Use 0.33mm shims, max four, between outboard starter mount pad and eng if whine during crank, moving starter towards flywheel. You'll want to make the measurement at high point of flywheel. Haven't ahd much experience doing it myself since it has been fine since warranty expired (knock on wood) Anybody want to confirm or deny this stuff ??

Better watch it Hammy, this forum takes its regulations seriously. Specifically I refer you to Forum Regulation Section 8, Category 4F which states: "Humouress comments are explicitly prohibited under all circumstances" If required, moderators will come to your place of residence or employment.
