Check Engine Light? I have a 1995 4x4 350 5.7l. You cant hook a tester to it but I was told you could take a clip of some sort and check how many times the light blinks. Can someone tell me step by step how to do that please. I was told once before that it was a map sensor but not sure.

| I am not sure how, these other guys will help you with that, but I will suggest either AutoZone or Advance Auto, and because to read the computer is 100% free.

I went to autozone and they gave me some kind of metal clip and they showed me (sort of) how to use it and I thought it was a map sensor just cant remember. I need to know about the light blinks ,how many, and what part they are.

you diag connector is down by your knee, it has a notch sticking up in middle, face it up and jump the 2 rh top terminals. key on engine off, jump terms will flash code 12 3 times, then your code 3 times when no more codes/done i think 12 again 3 times

but jumping the ALDL works, as long as you have a chilton's manual to decipher the blinks.

Your truck is in one of the conversion years for OBD I & II, you can check which you have on the upper right corner of radiator emmissions label. You probably have OBD I and the connector would look like this picture. Located just right of the parking brake. ![]() Should be able to jump the connectors with a paper clip or small wire. You probably remember from last time that codes will repeat after getting through however many are present. If no codes are stored it will just keep repeating 12,3 on check eng light. BTW many parts stores, including the big brand name ones, will not read codes for free in California. And you can hook a tester to it if you want to do it fancy, I have one. Codes you can get may be for any number of things not just MAP. You pull the codes and we can help with translating them.

I used to have a 1992 Chevy 1500. If you don't have the right kind of reader, you can use a paper clip to jumper the OBD1 port and the check engine light will blink in a pattern. Instructions for jumpering the port and decoding the blinks can be found in a Chilton manual. Sorry, it's been a while since I had to do this, so I can't remember which holes on the port you have to jumper.
