2000 GMC Sonoma, ABS/Brake light coming on

My 2000 GMC Sonoma has been experiencing some problems with the ABS light and Brake light coming on and staying on at unpredictable times. I have already heard that i need to take it to a shop that can scan the ABS system. My question is, has anyone else encountered this problem? And if so, what was the ACTUAL problem? I've heard that the sensors can be picking up dirt and whatnot. But how much did this problem cost to fix? I'm having a problem getting my truck inspected because of this, and a broken seat handle that won't allow me to adjust the seat in any other position than the position it is in now. The seat handle to lean the seat forward is still on there...but the one to adjust how upright you sit is broken.

Anyone with any help or insight on the ABS/Brake light problem, it would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

well, we really can't go anywhere with out knowing the codes. it would just be a blind guess.

no, you can take it to any major autoparts store, they'll scan it for free.

check your brake fluid level, btw. i've seen friend tearing half his car apart figuring that light, and all it was was low brake fluid level.

Welcome to the forum Drop, drop in any time

A lot of auto stores just use an eng scanner and won't read the ABS codes.
Try to get it read by a dealer. Tech 3's cost 3,000
and Tech 4's cost 4,000, and even the cheap ABS code scanners cost 300 and up.
Since there are multiple codes and situations where the light may come on
but no code is set, the "ACTUAL" problem could be any of dozens of things.
The cost will of course depend on what the problem is, rangeing from "free" to hundreds.
Mis-adjusted switches, dirty sensors, loose wires are what you hope it is.

You also may want to check with the dealer regarding the recall for 2000 Sonomas
for ABS moter with bad spring clips. This leads to motor bearing becoming misaligned
    leaving a non-functional ABS. Campaign # 00V055000 3/27/2000 ??
Dealer to replace BPMV (brake press mod valve) 42,696 recalled.

They were not having a good run at GM plants for ABS at the time,
they also had a recall for 2wd's where they failed to seat the flare nuts
which could cause leaks, pressure loss, and all the fun that gives.

Regarding the pair of lights coming on at "unpredictable" times,
I would suggest watching to see if you can see a pattern.
Coming on at <10mph, around 35mph, when hard braking from higher speeds,
during quick turns or acceleration, etc. There's usually a pattern to it.
Being very sure there's no pattern and noting it under specific conditions can help too.

And almost true. However, when it comes to the ABS system, not all auto parts stores have the equipment to do it. Recently I found this out. Depending on the area I believe, it may be different, however where I am, AutoZone and Advance Auto A.K.A. Parts America, can scan the ECM with simply issues like the Po300 and what not. However, ABS is a whole different animal. I have found that just about every NAPA store can scan for these codes and get them right. Be sure to specify what the issue is when you bring it in, and make sure the store can do it.

It is nice to have these free services, but sometimes you have to know who to trust. Just thought I would add that.

I have the same issue. Both lights come on around 20% of the time, always when turning my 2000 S10 on. I can turn it off and back on again and they go out most of the time. I do not notice any braking issues with lights on or off. I believe it is electrical.

check your wheel speed sensor wires. i would bet you will find your problem there.

if you can, have your code history read.

disregard, i thought you said the problem happened while turning. i would still have the history read.

I replaced my Brake Light Switch and that cured mine right up. Mine was doing the same thing randomly and I replaced the switch. Works great.
