well when you take off the front panel thing to get to the radio there are sets of wires you have to unhook (headlights) then there is one for the air bag switch to turn it off on the passenger side, but I was reading not to touch that thing becuase it could set off the air bag and then you will have a big problem.

just unhook your battery and occupy your self with something else for about a half hour, then your good to go.

as for the tailgate.
you will need a T-40 torx bit to undo the three screws holding the handle to the tailgate.

once it is loose then remove the trim with a flat head screw driver. there are four tabs holding it on, one in each corner. lightly press down on the top corners and it should come out with out breaking.

once the cover is off you will see the rods for the latch on each side connected to the handle. take a pair of needle nose pliers and push the rods out of their holes and remove the handle from the tailgate.

once removed, you can drill out the factory rivet and replace the rivet with the appropriate size bolt, 2 washers and a nylock nut. the nylock nut will allow you to keep a little slack in the handle without the risk of it falling apart.

it is easiest to install the handle by screwing the bottom screw in first then lining up the top 2 then you can re-install the rods and trim, then feel proud that you saved yourself a lot of money for a new handle.

awesome everyone wants to help... luckily I fixed the door handles on the old truck and I would rather buy a new door from the junk yard than go through that again

but ashley you are perfect for working on trucks. well look at it this way a man has a little harder time doing repairs in tight places with big hands. and a woman with smaller hands will fit perfect.
