are you talking about the center bolt that has the 2 pieces of metal that flap like wings?? should be able to put a backup on it. why are you taking this piece off or did i miss part of the conversation??

you need to drill that metal piece in the middle out. that's what's causing your tailgate from working, it's seized up.
put it in a bench vice and use a bit about the same size as that rivet. you shouldn't have to go very deep before the face of the rivet breaks off, then you can replace it with a bolt and a nylock nut.

it may be easier to drill out the rivet from the back side. i think the back side of the rivet has a lip that is easier to drill.

yuh the wing thing I dont want to take it apart I just want the "wings" to move so that they open the tailgate, but they must be so rusted that they dont move anymore. My tailgate doesnt close so I have to use some bungy cords to keep it up which wouldnt bother me except I open that tailgate a good 5-10 times a day for my business so it gets to be a pain in the butt! what is a backup?

the ones i have redone had a bolt. they would get tight and have to use a backup wrench on it to break it. evidently if they come riveted, i been fixing everyone elses stuff once they got through with it.

it is easy. just drill the rivet out and replace with a bolt and nylock nut.

you could try some PB blaster if you want to keep from tearing it apart, but i don't think it will work.

hey, ain't nothing wrong with my fix, works better than what the GM engineers thought of. i think chevy is the only one that has this problem with the tailgate.
