Some just have to stay on and some trucks have a fuse you can remove.

use the parking brake

my dad has a 98 and if you put the paring brake on one click it turns off the lights but doesn't engage the brake. not the best solution in the world but it does work

If you want to take the bubble gum duct tape approach and still have the lights to be useful at your discretion, try to cut in a switch for which you can run lead wires to the cab and install the switch.

Out under the hood in my truck there is a RELAY in the fuse box that works the running lights, I assume that if you pulled it out it would turn them off

turn the manual headlight switch to on and then push the dome override switch twice you should hear a beep and that should do the trick.

check the harness at the e-brake switch you might find the wire that will stop your DTL and still work your brake indicator
