No Tach, no speedo, no gas gauge, no shift indicator, and...

From a dead stop it feels like the auto transmission is starting in 3rd gear. It also clunks like a son of a gun from reverse to drive. Also, the check engine soon light is on.

Sorry to be a taker on my first post, but I really am the village idiot when it comes to vehicles. The truck is an '02 1500 Z71 with about 61k miles and has generally been trouble free to this point. Other than described, the truck runs fine. Took it to a local garage and they got transmission codes when scanned. They advised taking it to a tranny guy, as they don't do that. The problem happened randomly while driving on a normal road going about 45mph.

At this point, I'm assuming a trip to a transmission guy is in order. I scanned thru all 25 pages and many of you guys clearly know your stuff. I'd hoped to find a similar problem but no luck.

Any thoughts? Thanks

i had a similar problem with my '97 and it turned out to be a bad ignition switch. the speedo went crazy, then died. after that i only had 2nd, 3rd and reverse, no 1st or overdrive.

with yours being an '02, this may not be your problem.
do you remember the specific codes that they pulled?

I wasn't kidding when I said I'm a bit of a moron around cars and trucks. I'm friendly with the guys that own the garage, so I'm planning on calling them tomorrow to get those codes.

My speedo didn't really go crazy, just sort of flatlined. I was cruising back to my house and something made me glance down and everything was flat. At the next stop sign I almost got t-boned as the thing would barely move from a dead stop. Once I kept on the gas for a while it finally moved, then ran like normal.

I'm really hoping this isn't transmission related. Although it is giving me a good reason to go buy another car.

hmmmm....
so, you step on the gas pedal and nothing happens, and if you really step on it picks up, but with a kick and like as if it "woke up"? does the gas pedal feel stiff and then lets go? hope it is, as it's very easy fix then....

i have no idea why you need to go to trannie guy to have codes read. all codes go to ECM - engine control module - and should show on your OBD2 scanner. dealer has some proprietory stuff they can run for trannie troubles, but it's PROPRIETORY.

as of instrument cluster trouble - there's a word out there about recall on those for some models. run VIN by dealer.

When I step on it from a dead stop, the truck moves but very slowly. Very much like a standard inadvertantly started in 3rd instead of 1st. Slowly it gets up to speed, then runs normally.

I took it to a client of mine who owns a garage initially, and he told me the codes were transmission related. He advised I take it there. They're suppose to be tearing into it either over this past weekend or on Monday. I'm just trying to get some info so I can have an intelligent conversation with them.
