Question Popping out of gear

Hi all. I have a 65 gmc and i seem to be having problems with one of my gears popping out of position. It has a four speed manual, and second keeps popping out of position. The setup for the gears is 1st 0-5mph, 2nd 0-10/15mph?, 3rd 15-25/30mph, 4th 25+. It starts popping out of gear at about 7 mph, but i can quickly pop it back in. at 10 mph it pops out and at that point is too fast to pop it back in without grinding gears and dogs the truck down if i shift it into 3rd. Is there an easy solution to this. A friend said it might be the gear fork, but i thought i would ask around before i go too far.

mine would jump out if I was to apply to much torque either in the way of accelerateing or decelerateing to fast. If I held it in gear it was fine though. My solution was to hold it in second.

the post about the syncro's is on the right track. is it hard to get in to that gear also? if so, then your brass blocking ring is shot and you will need to replace/rebuild your 1-2 syncro. drain the oil and look for gold colored shavings.

your shift linkage could also need adjusted.

I'm not sure when the last time was that the clutch or any of the trans stuff was touched. I just bought it a few weeks ago from my father in law, but as far as i know it has had minimal maintenance since he rebuilt it and put a 350 in to replace the 305. could it also be too much torque, because I am unsure whether or not they replaced the trans, or kept the same one. I will do more checking.

i doubt torque is your problem. most likely your syncros are bad or you have a shift linkage that needs adjustment. other causes could be input shaft endplay, worn gears or bad bearings.

manual trans are actually fairly simple to rebuild. drain the oil first to see what you are dealing with.

I agree 100% it's the syncro's just replace all while there that way that's it good for a long while also do a re-seal you can do it yourself.
