Rear end noise? Like a grinding noise.

i have a GMC 97 z71 and there is grinding noise coming from the back. Sounds like grinding brake pad in a way. Gets louder into the gas more and quiets down when you let off. Doesnt' do it in neutral. It not really loud but enough you can hear it. Jacked it up and spun the tires and the noise was coming from the rear end area and not the tires. Drives fine. Any advice or more questions please let me know.

check for siezed u-joints. if they go bad they can tear your pinion bearing to bits. personal experiance

well no slack in the tires. runs fine. just the noise is annoying. figured it was the pinion gears.

Define that.

If I jack the read of my truck up, I can move the wheels 3/8 of a revolution before they stop.

Teh rear end also thuds around when I accelerate...Similar?

the simplest way to check ring and pinion backlash is to move the drive shaft while the rear tires are on the ground. the correct way though, is to remove the cover and use a dial indicator on the ring gear. moving the tires is going to affect the spider gears, which could also have to much play.

i have a f-150 in the bay at school that has this problem. it's a 5spd and every time you shift you can hear a clunk. it needs a whole new rear end due to excessive play of the spider gear and axle shaft splines. all that smacking of the spider gears womped out the pin and housing on the diff.

i believe the OP's problem is the u-joints and pinion bearing though.
