Tire Shop Says to Put 65 psi in tires!!!

The front tire on my Silverado truck was low today so I went downtown to the tire shop.

Anyway, the kid brings the air hose out from inside the garage and proceeds to fill up my low front tire. Then he says to me .... "Your tires are rated for 80 psi so you should put more air in them than you have."

I said, "Ya, but the side panel of my door says I should inflate them to 35 psi."

But the kid says, these aren't the original tires. And he is right. I put BF Goodrich All Terrain snow tires on my Silverado 4 x 4.

Anyway, he filled all four tires up to 65 psi and said that is what they do with all their tires rated for high psi when they put them on 1/2 tons etc.
Is this right? Has anyone heard of this before????????

nock 'em back down to 45psi and call it good. they're snow tires for one, they can't do there job if they are over-inflated. if you get stuck in the deep stuff, you could probably run them around 10psi for a short time with out breaking a bead. just keep a portable compressor with you to air them up before you do any highway speeds.

Ditto to mud!

I run 55 in mine and they are rated for 80 psi. 55 gives them good even wear and traction in the rain (for me anyways) on a 1 ton dually.

i have run into this before. just because it says 80 does not mean that is what they call for. look close enough and it says MAX 80 psi. i set mine at 50. not as rough as ride at that pressure. it still aint good but not like it would be at 75 or 80.
dont let the tire people fool you like that. all of mine hire college and high school kids that dont know any different. you did right by asking around.

I run 60 if I'm not running heavy....I have a good tire dealer by me that i've listened to for 25yrs and always had good luck except if a mechanical problem is found. they always say 75% of max is a good avg inflation. as I've posted before you can weigh the truck and go to the tire manufacturer web site for recommended inflation

the tires are rated for 80 pounds just for the load range that they are..... your 1/2 ton isnt rated for that much weight, but I ran 35 punds in my first set of bfg a/t's and they wore badly on the outsides..... Im running 50 pds now, and got good even wear on them after 20,000 miles.... to much air will add un needed stress on your suspension..... or thats what the Goodyear representative of the offroad tires told me

i have the same tires on my 1/2 ton, and i run 38 in the front and 32 in the back. i dont haul alot of weight, and ive found that much more pressure than that in the rear will cause accelerated tire wear.

my tires are rated for 80 psi and i run em at 40, they ride smoother, but noticable fuel increase to power the bulging balloons, If i tow or decide i`m going ona trip or hot rodding around town i jack them up.
