Spitting oil out of exhaust Whats up fellas I just bought my 1st GMC its a 86 2500 crewcab with a 350 5.7 liter engine. I have been checking out the site since i got the truck and found a couple of problems and who better to ask but you GMC pro's. When i bought the truck I couldnt tell that it was spitting oil unburnt out the tail pipe because it would only do it when you rev the engine. idling it wont do it. At first I thought it was the piston rings but that would make it smoke right??? it only smokes not that much but when you rev it or like when i am on the highway and punch it it shoots out a puff out of both pipes. I LOVE THIS TRUCK i had a 82 Suburban 2500 and it was the best. I dont see no trucks on the road like mine at ALL it was a state truck for Nashville, I was told by a friend that it was my valve seals what do you guys think??? Love the site !!!!

well wlecome, and hope you stay a while.... a little bit of the "puff" you are getting at highway speed punch may be a little bit of fuel..... older carbed motors tend to do it if the carbs adjustment is off just a touch,or thats what all of mine have done, but theres people here that know much more than I, and Im sure that someone will be able to get you off on the right track

Thanks my friend I refuse to sell this truck, I HOPE that the motor is good and that it is my valve seals, it is VERY strong, i can burn rubber from 1 block to the next. When i start it it seems to smoke more then goes away, but it is cold. Does anyone know where i can get a manual for this truck online?? I bought the truck because I have a 98 GSXR 600 and Custom cabinet buisness want to use it for both and found a website that has all bike manuals for free, would be cool to get that for the truck too. Also I need a wiring diagram for it because the tail lights are rigged when i hit the right blinker the hazards come on, and the left bulb is half as bright as the right when the lights are on. CRAZY!?!?! what do you guys think? Dont worry I will be here for a while I wanna keep this truck FOREVER!! I just went out and started it and its hard to start to, it has a electric choke and when its cold the choke plate is 75% closed so i loosened the 3 screws on the choke cover and turned it right just until it stayed open. Pumped the gas 1 time and it started up, is that OK what i did??

are you sure that this is not just really dirty water?? i will have a drip out of mine that looks like oil. a cracked or broken valve seal is going to burn oil when you first crank her up, usually. then she will go to acting a little better.

the dirty water issue is some thing to check .on older truck's an on newer one's they produce a fair amount of moisture in the exhaust system . if it is actually oil ,do a leak down test ,to rule out ring's or worn out valve guides . has it ever been tuned up ? have a scanner put on it .

| probably cant scan it if its an 86 and carb'd. i highly doubt its got an OBD system on it...... did you say it only does it until the engine warms up or it just does it worse then? its common to have some moisture on initial startup bc the engine / exhaust has built up condensation inside of it that will blow out and some will burn out. also, while the engine is still cold are the parts inside it have contracted thus allowing oil to get through some places and get into the cylinders and out the exhaust. once the engine warms up and everything is expanded this will seal off most those oil "leaks" causing less oil to burn or be blown out. next, are you Positive its oil? likeothers have mentioned it could be just dirty water caused by that condensation build up mixing with any gunk in the exhaust. my other guess is that it could be small bits of carbon being blown out. espicially if the truck wasnt drivin very often before you bought it. IF, you are pretty sure its oil you may could pull eacch spark plug out and check to see if any of them have a decent amount of oil on them, this might at least point to which cylinder the problem is on ( i know that if the spark plug is covered in oil you'd proabably expierence a missfire, but it cant hurt to check just in case) laslty, sorry if i explained this down to a 3rd grade level, its not meant to insult your inteligence at all, you just havent been around long enough yet for me to know you level of understanding and ability to work on an engine. after a while i'll better know how to exactly respond to you. its just easier this way the first time so i dont have to go back and retype it again. oh yea, wealcome to the forum bud

If your choke was not opening all the way then it would load up and smoke when you hammer it. I would expect that she may smoke when you fire it up and the engine is cold. If it stops shortly after it could be the valve seals. Or maybe the carb out of adjustment. If it is valve seals then you will have some black in your tail pipe. And when you run it the condensation in your pipe will mix with the carbon and oil and run black out the tail pipe. Just check your oil every day. And if it don't use an excessive amount I would not worry about it. my daddy always said " Son, if it use oil and smokes it is getting lubricated. Just keep putting oil in her and she will run forever and you never have to change the oil because you always have fresh in it."...........LOL Hammer

Yes sir you are right roadhammer the tailpipe is caked with that black stuff I will take some god pics tomorrow of the tailpipe, I parked the truck between my house and the neighbors, when I started it I let it warm up for about 5 to 10 min then gave it some gas not really hard either and sprayed both our houses with this oil and black smoke residue and when i say spray its shootin out like outta spray bottle only reason i am really concerned is because I just bought it and in Nashville we have to go through emissions and when they hook that thing to the pipe and rev the engine its probly gonna blow up the machine, THANKS FELLAS FOR THE EXPERT ADVICE!!!!!! I gonna let you know how it goes tomorrow

There should be no emmissions check on an 86 truck. They will look to see if all the factory smog stuff is in place and hooked up. But most places do not sniff test a car that old. I am next door in Carolina and here the sniffing stops at 96 but the will check it and make sure it is all there and attached on any car less then 35 years old. Hammer

dallas and harris county here test anything 3 years to 25 years old. at 25 years, you can go get a green sheet as classic where the only inspection you have is the safety.
