how do I get a reader to work

I have a 1995 GMC k1500 sierra with a 5.0, that has a random miss..... I have replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor and pcv valve........ The only time that it is doing it is when I am idling...... then when under a load, like going up a hill it makes a grinding/pinging noise.. and doesn't have the power it once had... since it started my mileage dropped from 23 on hwy to 16........ any ideas??? I tried reading codes, but am not getting power to the port......

If that's an OBD-1 like I think it is, couldn't you pull codes by
jumping A and B on the ALDL, and counting the flashes ?
Course check your dash warn lamps work at key on first...

check the fuse for the lighter for the power problem. sounds like the O2 may be weak, you will need a scanner to read it. the pinging is spark knock, did you disturb the timing or knock the wire off that you disconnect for setting the timing?

The miss started before I changed everything...... and nothing this far has helped it..... I'll try jumping the code.......one of my friends was wondering if It might be my cam or valves.... Is this a possibility?
