Brads right it might have been a big black bug. But really I hope it's nothing bad.

Exhaust?? I'm lost
chances are they never cleaned the tank when they flushed it, good project for the the next sunny day and a couple of cold ones

hey leo, i misread that ever so slighty.
reason i mention about junk in the tank is most every truck i have owned has had this. whether it be that the top doesnt snap on right or there is a crack in the tank.

I'm with bradrhale on this - let it be.

Think of the system as a whole. If you had to pick a place for "little black swirls" to accumulate, the surface of the coolant in the expansion tank is exactly where you want them. This is one of the design features of an expansion tank in a cooling system.

If they (the swirls) are really bugging you, try this trick, We always skimmed any oily returns out of the inspection tank with strips of newspaper. Seems newsprint kind of lets water roll off but it sucks up any type of oil like a magnet,

If you clean the surface and the stuff never returns... it was probably left in the cooling passages during the manufacturing process.

Boy I almost missed this this morning!!!!
The elders should be saying, if you clean it up, then it appears again(less than 2 months) then further investigation would be warranted, otherwise drive it like your father owns it
