Question In tank electric fuel pumps??

Just curious, now that I have this 96 GMC with an in tank fuel pump I hear they can go without warning.

Any tips on when one should change one to be ahead of the game, or can one check the pressure and get an idea of how good it may be, I imagine mine may be original and therefore has 137.000 miles on it, and I have heard some take the box up, but I am installing a fifth wheel hitch, which will make it tougher to do if it goes on the road, so any feedback on do's and don'ts or how much life to expect?

Thanks.

no warning whatsoever. you can check the pressure but i dont believe that is going to tell you anymore than what you might already know. lifting the bed is alot easier but can still be done by dropping the tank provided that you didnt just stop and fill it up. the tank bands are usually what give everyone such a headache as they rust a bit and make it difficult to loosen. my grandfather has a 96 and has already changed his pump out. believe he did it at the 125K mark. but my FILs truck never had a problem and is still running the factory pump.

i have a 94 chev 1500 and pulled it on my ramps to look at something and when i went to try and pull it off it wouldnt start and i realized it was the pump, so from one start to the other and about 10 minutes is all it took for mine to go out without warning, but the pump was only about $45 and about 15 minutes to change (my bed was off for painting) lucky me. by the way the truck had 200k on it

Well I have been told to cut an access panel, but one would need to know just where to cut it, and my fifth wheel hitch rails may be in the way, but I don't know for sure.

BUT if your up to a small an easy modification i can tell you of a pump that costs a little over a hundred bucks and can be made to work....
and can handle a supercharger.....hehehe

I see it looks to be close to the back of the cab, my tank is a 34 us gal, which I think is a 28 canadian, so wonder if mine would be that close to your location?

Worth a look, if this rain would ever stop.

Last time I was in Grande Prairie was to go to Princess auto with my buddy from Baldonnel, just down from Fort St. John.

Thanks for posting picture.
