| He didn't charge me anything for the diagnostics But here is the update.. Once he dropped the pan he cleaned the contacts for the solenoid and then did the air check on it. Everything was okay there as I was right there and he showed me everything that was wrong with it..nothing. The Codes stopped appearing. Then he put the pan back on after replacing the filter and put new tranny fluid in..by the way other then the normal dust at the bottom no metal or anything that would raise your eyebrows. He change my oil while it was up an installed a new wix filter. The ecm was not recognizing the solenoid so he tested it and it was bad..had to get a new one at his cost as he let me listen to the Jobber and GM..GM was 350 bucks and the Jobber ..who is very reputable here in Phoenix cost was 140..He told me we could check a junk yard but I opted for the 140 one. He reflashed the new computer did the passlock deal and it cured the problem. Matter of fact my idle is back where it should be and i have gained around 400 RPM at 70MPH before I was hitting 2500 at 70 now I am around 21 to 22. The Idle is smooth now and no little misses. The total cost of the job with a New ECM, Oil Change new filters for the tranny and Engine and Tranny Fluid came to 260.00 bucks I thought you couldn't get any fairer then that. Plus I asked him how much to install a tranny temp gauge and he told me if I bought the gauge it would be 80.00 bucks and if I decided to put a shift kit in..he said I really didn't need one.. the 4l80E it would be 100 if I bought the Transgo kit which he said he has had great luck with..So there you go. |

| I agree on the 4L80-E it is not likely you NEED the shift kit, UNLESS, you like the firmer shift and want it. You better add that guy to your Christmas card list and have him a pizza delivered for lunch. He is treating you more than fair, and $600 for a rebuild on that trans is very cheap. Of course that does not include any solenoids or hard parts if needed when the time comes. You got a steal to get all the done for $260. NIce to see there are still a few good people left out there in the world. I bet you know where you are going next time you have a problem, or where to tell freinds and relatives to go. Glad to hear you got it fixed. |

| Normally all a shift kit does is firm up the shift and change shift points. 4L80-E does that already by comptuer control on an as needed basis, so as I said, unless you WANT the firm shift all the time, it is not a NEED. Some people still want it though. |

| ceasefire49, My 4L80E seems to be doing the same thing yours was. I have 180,000 miles on mine. It's a 99' GMC, pushed by a 5.7 Vortec, and rarely tows anything at all. I've run Mobil1 or Amsoil ATF in it since it was new, and installed a HUGE B&M cooler, deep aluminum pan, and an external spin-on filter with a Magnafilter on the side. I've also used a Hypertech programmer to firm up the shifting. All this before it even had 10,000 miles on it. Mine just started having hiccups this morning on the way home from work. While driving on the interstate, I totally lost overdrive. When I got home, I noticed the cooling lines were warmer than normal. Typically, I can place my bare hand on the cooler lines, and leave them there, when it's at operating temp. Not so today. I assume the higher temp came from not having Torq-Conv lockup. I allowed it to cool for a few hours, than took it for another spin. It seems the T-Converter never went to lockup. Then after about 5 miles, I lost overdrive again. Once I lose overdrive, it shifts far firmer than it ever has before. I've got the OEM service manual set, I think the problem you've had was "no signal to the solenoid". It says check the VCM/PCM. Exactly what is a VCM/PCM? I assume it's Vehicle Control Module/Powertrain Control Module. I have a scan tool and there are no DTC's. Any help from the forum is appreciated. | At 180K any automatic is living on borrowed time. The 4L60 and 4L80 transmissions are very good performers. I really doubt that towing was the cause of the OPs trans issue. Some just last longer than others. |
