| How much tranny fluid? Hi, Just wondering how much fluid is suppose to be in there. I filled it up till I thought it full but when I started the truck to check it was low. So I filled it up some more and now it is good when the fluid is hot right in the middle of the hot crosshatch, but when I check the fluid when it's cold it is about 1 inch above the hot crosshatch. Is this too much fluid? I know your suppose to check the fluid when it is hot or running. Thanks for the help!!!! Joe |

| I'd say it sounds good. If its hot and running in Park, and in the proper area of the dipstick, then that is where it should be. If it were to much, not only would it show over full on the dipstick when hot, it would also likley be foaming and you would know it. If way overfull, then it will be foaming and leaking out the little vent tube on the trans and likely be dripping fluid on the passenger side of the trans case.

| So if it reads overfull a cold and not running it is ok then? I did pull the pan off and filter change and refilled. It took close to 10 litres of ATF which I thought wa alot because I thought the tranny empty holds 13 litres, I know that the torque converter holds a few litres that cannot be removed without doing a tranny flush. |

| Sure its OK to be overful when its not running. As some of the fluid drains back to the pan when not running, it will show higher level. I believe in another thread you said this was a Duramax 2500HD vehicle? That should be an Allison Auto trans, and yes they are thirsty and hold alot of fluid. That does seem like alot. Do you have you owners manual for the truck? There should be a section for capacities in it somewhere.

| not that i am specialist on Alison hd trannies, but it is awfully much fluid for refill. refills are normally about third of what trannie holds, including torque converter, lines, and cooling radiator. basically, refills are 4-6 qrts. 10 liters sounds somehow way too much. |

| Allisons do hold a bunch of fluid. I would check the capacity in the owners manual if you have it. But if the dipstick is right, then its right, how can you argue with that unless its the wrong dipstick for the tube. Any clue how much you got out of it doing the service, compared to what you put in?

| Well I never got the fluid out of the torque converter just what came out of the pan when I dropped it and the spin on filter. I was told that the tranny hold 13 litres give or take so I'm going by what the dipstick tells me and it seem to ready correct when hot in the crosshatches. No I did not check how much came out in the pan as I did the transfer case as well. Well I will have to check the manual and also see my buddies truck to see where his level is sitting on the dipstick. The tranny is an Alison 1000 I believe. Like I said before with the fluid cold not running it is about an 1 inch above the hot crosshatch on the dipstick. |

| And that should be OK cold and NOT running. What matters is running in Park and warm or hot is most accurate. To me, according to your dipstick I think it is just fine. Also as explained earlier, if it is not foaming, a good sign the level is correct.

so, what i have a feeling of, is that torque converter back leaked into the transmission. thus, when he had it refilled by dipstick, it took what it took, as fluid was pushed back by pump. then it leaked back again. of course, i'm wrong. i hope so. but! first thing to do is to check on DRAIN AND REFILL capacity for that trannie. betcha it'll be around 5-6 qrts, not 10 liters, which is around 12 qrts. makes sense? you don't want your converter back leaking, as you might have major issues engaging gears in the morning on cold down the road. ahm, so, like i said: Fluid capacity chevy 2002 2500 automatic transmission? In: Chevy Silverado [Edit categories] [Edit] Fluid Capacities Automatic Transmission, 4L80E Initial Fill..........7.7 quarts[2] Automatic Transmission, 4L60, 60E Initial Fill..........5.0 quarts[2] Automatic Transmission, Total Fill 4 speed 4L60E..........11.0 quarts 4 speed 4L80E..........14.0 quarts 2. With the ENG at operating TEMP, shift TRANS through all gears. Let ENG slow idle in PARK for at least 3 minutes. Check fluid level and add fluid as needed. Do not overfill. Wix Trans Filter.....58847 [1] Wix Trans Filter.....58608 [2] Wix Trans Filter.....58836 [3] Wix Trans Filter.....58904 [4] Wix Trans Filter.....58917 [5] 1. 4L60E - Deep Pan 2. 4L80E - Deep Pan 3. 4L80E - Includes pan gasket 4. 4L60E - Shallow Pan 5. 4L80E - Shallow Pan - Pan Gasket not included - If Pan Gasket required, use 58836 like i said - though i was skoash off - at the most, it should take in 7.7 qrts, which is about 6 liters, maybe 6.5. not ten. something ain't right...... unless, of course, it was almost drained but, then again, it won't be moving.... | |
