I am thinking 4.5 seconds is fairly good for one of those older trucks. Same with my 86. They work good. But they are slow. I am guessing more like 6 seconds on them from stop to stop. Both seem to be about the same, so I assumed that was just normal and going to live with it. I usually only use the power switch to crack the window anyway unless at a drive thru. I guess I never had entered the power window speed contest. Thought about it once but never did it. Hey dude, I'll set you down 2 fingers if you give me the move !!!

I just changed the passenger window motor in my 86. I got mine from Shucks/O'Reily auto parts and it was 20bucks. It was a little more complicated than described above but once you get the old one out it's not too bad. Anyone with large arms will have trouble with this repair. I'm a fairly small guy 5'10" and 180lbs and it was difficult to get my arms through the holes in the door without getting stuck. But now that my window goes up and down like it's supposed to it was all worthwhile!

So, I am trying to fix a similar problem on my 1989. The window motor runs, but gets stuck along the way up and down. Is this the motor or regulator? Also, based on the above posts, it sounds like it is not necessary to remove the entire metal frame in the door that the regulator is attached to? Do you have to drill out the rivets, and just pull the whole thing through the opening? Thanks

Power window regulator R&R

I guessed at the model.

I have no experience with this task, but just from reading the procedure - it looks like you may have to drill the rivets out.

Thanks for the info, that helps me see what it will take to do the whole thing.
I suspect it may just be the motor as the window seems to move ok, and when it gets to the top, the motor wants to keep going, giving a loud racheting sound.
(stripped plastic gears?)
If it is just the motor, does anyone know if it can be replaced without taking out the whole panel, regulator, etc? Sounds like I should be able to just drill out the rivets, and pull the motor out of the opening. Thanks again for the info.

If the windows are just slow you may have worn wheels in the channels or just dirty and need to be cleaned and regreased.
I think you can get replacement wheels.

window motors

hey jhh, i've got an '89 K1500 and had the same prob with my drivers side.
in the window motor bought at autozone, there's a nylon gear that strips out, all other gears in this assembly were steel. changing that motor solved my issue. and yes, there are rivets that have to be drilled out and replaced with what i have always heard called 'sex' bolts. that's needed to keep the bolt heads from interfering with movement of the track assembly. sorry this is late, but hope it helps you and future readers. let me know if you need more details on replacing that window motor.

Thanks gregd, I have not had time to complete this yet, I have the new motor and all of the panels off but am dreading the actual removal of the inner door panel, rivets, etc... I assume that the bolts that came with the replacement motor are the replacements you are talking about, or do I need to look for something else? Any other tips on this would be helpful. Thanks.
