| As far as the Full Synthetic goes in almost any(notable) brand of oil, you are getting a fairly decent product. Depending on the company, they will start with a mineral base stock, and others a man made stock, and a very few use a organic base for their oils......... The basic difference in the oils as someone else stated is going to be the additives........ Which completely makes the different brands quite different. Mobil one is the only synthetic oil that caterpillar recommended for our new 993 loader........ Royal Purple makes and excelent product.... world renowned....... when castrol first started with the synthetic, it took a bit of trying to get it down..... from what I know, they do make a very good product now...... GMC brings up an excelent point...... If you are wanting Full Synthetic, be sure what you buy has it on the label...... the companies cannot(by law) make a blend of synthetics and label it as a full synthetic with a few exceptions. Now the reason that they say you can run synthetic oil for more than 3000 miles is due to the molecules in the oil....... see, with a mineral oil, you have desired(closed molecules) and undesired(open ended molecules) the desired resist the breaking down that the heat, and shearing effect that the motor puts it through. the open ended do not so much....... the other thing is, open ended molecules can attach theirselves to the others forming sludge deposits.( I know sludge consists of wear material and dirt as well) Another reason is the additives that they add are more easily added and last longer in the synthetic oil, than the mineral oil........ If you change filters every 3000 miles, then in theory, you can skip an oil change........ Now, with the "blends" there are a few companies out there that take used oil, and recycle it....... the ones who do it right, will run it through a 10,5 and a 3 micron filter upon recieving it..... then, they strip the unwanted things out of the old oil, leaving them with a clean, and like new "synthetic oil" The base stock that Full Synthetic comes from is a man made or man altered thing that gives the oil only the wanted molecules........... Then some of those companies will blend a part of the recycled oil, with a part of man made base, and they finish with the adding of additives....... still technically Full Synthetic, but mixes.................. Are they okay, absolutely. I do know that Mobil1, Royal purple, and Shell are 3 that do not blend for full synthetic....... they do use Recycled oil in their blends............ So Now, that I have made my spill about oils I Ask a question to the rest of you......... what do you all think of using different oil in you motor than what manufacturer recommends????? for Instance....... Winter, I run a 0w30 Mobil1 in my engine, and summer a 5w30 Mobil1 in my engine........ Is that okay????? I say yes And does anyone else know what the 5w in 5w30 stands for??? Sorry so long winded, could have kept going....... I just got back from another 4 day training on the use of oils in the Mobile Equipment for mining from Noria....... |

Most manufacturers recommend different oil viscosities for different situations. In the diesels I have tried 5W-40 in the winter and noticed very little difference. I usually run 15W-40 year round. In my gas engine, I run 5W-30 year round. | |

| I believe the 5w stands for ASE viscosity grade 5 winter. Bah Merlin's too fast... that's what Nimue says anyway... |
