    starter issues

I had to install a new starter yesterday. I bought a reconditioned Duralast that has a rating of 99%like new.
Anyway, I installed it last night and started it up, and there was a loud whining coming from it.So i read the directions, and it said if this occurs install a full shim across both bolt holes, and try again.SO i did, same sound.Installed another shim, same thing, last shim, same thing.
Then i read that it said for minor adjustments install 1 half shim on the onboard bolt, the one towards the motor. But it said do not install more than 4 on one bolt.So i threw 3 on one bolt, same sound, put the last one on, same sound.
Is it possible that this starter is just going to make that sound? If not, what damage is being done if I just leave it this way?

if it is a whine, i would say bearing. had a 96 with a whine but couldnt justify changing it out because the alt worked great. kid ended up buying and putting on a new alt. that cured the problem.

yes it starts it automatically then when i let go of the key it sounds like it winding down...
Transmission. Funny you should mention that. It needs to be rebuilt, and a shop in town is doing it. Going to cost around 1500 for all the work and stuff, but my girlfriend actually wants to drive it, so yeah.

ok..Right when i turn the key it starts the truck, no grinding or anything. But as soon as i let off the key it goes "PHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWW" hahah..thats the best i can do.
I am thinking that if there is no grinding or anything that it should be ok, but Ive never done a starter before.

if a start is noisy during cranking remove shims or decrase the backlash (if required file the starter) if the starter makes a zing or funy noise right after the engine fires, install a shim, the reason of the noise it not enough back lash, and the starter drive gear is being held on the flywheel too long.
    Gone.
