hard to say the other tbi was chewing out gas real bad and the injectors were weak but the only evidence to back up that the tbi is messed up is my tail pipe used to be clean and now its black as night

Nothing is more frustrating than figuring out what part works with another, when you are looking at rebuilt/ overhauled carbs/ TBI. I'll bet your regulator isn't regulatin'

Hope this helps:

if you had bothered to read the link in the post above you, you'd see a picture that answers your question.

Hey man,
If you head on over to Auto Zone, or whatever parts store is in your area, you can pick up a TBI rebuild kit for around $20. If you look at the diagram its part # 10, 11 & 12. You can do this with the engine cooled off, in about 1/2 hour. I'm thinking that you have a bad diaphram ( part # 12 ) and you don't have to remove the TBI to swap it out. It's possible that the spring part # 11 is worn out, and you can probably order one and replace that at the same time.

BTW, you said that you put a ton of injector cleaner in your truck, most of that stuff is alcohol, and it can eat holes in rubber based gaskets, kinda like that diaphragm part # 12.

FWIW, the overly rich fuel problem, you can live with it, but your mileage and performance is going to suffer, big time. These guys are giving you good advice here. If you lived in my neighborhood, I'd only charge you a 6 pack of my local favorite brew, Tallgrass Kold. Much better rate than the local Ford/Jeep/ everything else dealer rate of ( not kidding at all) $89. an hour.

If you can change out a couple of gaskets, you can easily do this yourself. Most overhaul kits come with instructions. It's just a couple of torks screws that hold the injectors down, and some gaskets. You are not trying to replace all the gaskets in the kit, you can if you want to, but it's probably not necessary.

Or, you can rebuild your old TPI and swap them out. Heck you can take apart your old unit, figure out what needs to come off to get to the regulator, then go do it on the one that's installed on your motor.

Here's another link on troubleshooting FI systems that is worth reading:
Troubleshooting pg. A

I copy good information like that page and paste them into a word document, then print it out for later use. My wife kinda frowns on my greasy paws contaminating her computer keyboards & monitor screens

I don't like taking my trucks to the dealers for anything. Sometimes you don't have a choice in the matter. $15. for a Haynes repair manual. I have one on every vehicle that I've ever owned. It has saved me literally thousands of dollars in labor costs over the years.
