brake light problems

I have a 1996 gmc sierra 1/2 ton 350 and my brake lights just recently stop working. Have checked all bulbs ,fuses, wiring and even changed the switch on the peddle. When you push the peddle to stop the lights flash and go off.

sounds like a broken wire possibly, if its dark out have someone run the pedal and look for glowing wires

If you have a trailer connector on the truck see if you're getting power there when the brake lights should be on. If you are then I'd suspect a bad ground on the lights. If not, or if it does the same thing, I'd suspect a broken wire as Stumpy says. Probably close to the connection to the brake pedal switch.

Welcome to the forum gjd99tahoe.
If your third brake light works normal, could be bad stalk switch.
If third light also bad, TCC switch (brake pedal).
Haz's work ok right?

thanks guys for the help. I've tried the ground and its ok. Don't have a trailor connect. And the third brake light doesn't come on either. The hazards work and when you turn on headlights they are on.

The hazards come on with the headlights?

Try pulling the relay for third light if you have one (I believe so)
relay I mean, I got that you have a light.
It sounds like an overload but not a short, so maybe relay.
If no relay, diconnect wire near pedal that goes to third light,
but not where it is shared to stalk (column).

If this does not get it then the problem is stalk related.

That's based on haz works fine all four corners,
all three stops wink on and then stay off.
Wires after the stalk are common for haz and stop,
so not the issue imo.
