Blinking 4 wheel drive light

I have a 96 GMC 1500 Sierra 4x 4. It has the push button
4 wheel drive buttons on the dash. Today I put it
4 wheel drive (high or low) and the light in the switch
just blinks. Where do I start looking??
Thanks,
Vance

it's blinking because you hit 4low while in gear. put in nuetral if you want it in 4low, otherwise push the 2hi button and be on your worry free way.

Yep, Its waiting for you to stop the vehicle, go into Neutral then once its engaged, it will stop blinking, stay solid lit, to tell you its engaged and you can now go into gear and move. IF you are doing all that right and it continues to blink, then you likely have a defective engagement solenoid and it is not going to engage.

There is definately something wrong, it blinks when I try and
shift from 2 high to 4 high. (4 high blinks)
I have no idea where to start checking?
Thanks,
Vance

That is normal for it to blink, then should go solid after a few seconds telling you that 4high has engaged. IF its not doing that, then I would first suspect the solenoid on the transfer case.
