i used this same method once before and got another year out of the starter with no other problems. guess its just chance though.
as for the term bendix, i believe that is a name of a company rather than a name of a part. i once said bendix and was informed real quick that that was the wrong term used for that.

It's called a Bendix because they were the first to come out with that sliding gear type drive. A lot of old-time mechanics still call 'em that.

If the guys who design 'em had to take one home, use it every day for 2 years, and do all the maint and repairs themselves, cars would have a button on the dash to change the oil, filters & plugs.

would you be one of these old timers you speak of?? i used the same terminology also and still do, just not much on here. bendix also does air parts for air brake systems. compressors, filters, bags.

Much like all circular saws are called "Skill Saw" and all recipricating saws are called "Sawsall".

So is it "technically" called the starter sliding gear drive?

the starters on those truck have a plastic head solenoid.they get small cracks from heat and corrode real bad in the solenoid head
