| Wow, sorry to come across that way. I certainly would not seek help and not get back to you. That is why I replied quickly to CHENGY's first reply to my question on Friday eve. I've also been reading your posts with interest and really appreciate the input and 'lessons'. The reason I (I can't speak for others) haven't replied again is because I haven't gotten to work on my truck yet. Normally the weekend would be my best time but my wife went to Savannah this weekend to visit her best friend whose cancer came back and I've been solo parent with my 3 and 6 year old boys. Between soccer, sports day, church, meals, etc. I sitting here looking at going to work in the morning feeling like I just got off work. Also, it rained on me on Sat. Believe me, I wish I could have checked it all out by now. I'm also out of practice as I used to do most all my own work when I was 'younger' but have a hard time getting time and am not up on the newer vehicles. I'm even stuck trying to figure out how to download Chengy's diagram he attached since I'm new to the forum. Sorry again, but I work 60 hours M-F and have to squeeze time to work on my stuff with a young family (I got married late in life due to health issues). So I will get back to you and tell you how it comes out and I REALLY DO appreciate all your help! If I don't get the truck fixed soon will have to pay a surcharge so next weekend is probably my last chance. Sorry to drag it out! |

| Ok, brief update. I must need some sleep as the attachment could have bit me in the face it was so obvious. Downloaded. Should help me. Also dug out my service manual for the truck--about two inches thick). Just to say in advance. Don't know if I will get time in the next few days to work on it. I will tell you how it comes out. Thanks much. |

| Wasn't you in particular - just a general observation. Good luck.

| Whoa Nelly !!! Let me apologize DCP, No no no, I was not, and as Chen says, not you in paticualar. He just made the observation, mentioned and I took off on my tangent. No, I wasn't dogging on you. You have at least responded before. I knew you'd be back. I am reffering to others, not you. It just fit here cuz of Chen statement and I was adding to his, and not reffering to you. Sorry, I should have made that clear and didn't. I have been here long enough, I usually throw other things in the conversation where it fits in the responses. Didn't mean for you to be singled out, but it sure does look that way doesn't it??? As you can tell, this is why the forum is so educating. People are makeing suggestions to your issues, and along the way, other eductaion and comments are being made that do fit in the conversation. Like the CA and Federal emmsions for example. Also like the expanation of the smog PUMP, that is not a pump. No they don't pertain to your exact problem, but they do fit in the discussion and it may not be of importance this exact time. But you never know, someday, you might say, "Oh yeah, I remember....." I have not seen a tip in here yet about it. But sometimes there are things you can do too to get it to pass emissions, then go back and change it. Depends on what your state checks. Sometimes you can just lean out the the carb, it will run like crud, but will pass. Then when you get it back home, turn back where it was. Or sometimes, you can retard the timing to get it pass, then when you get home advance it. Kinda like in OK several years back, we had to get safety inspection stickers every year. Lights, horm, turn signal etc. But they also checked to make sure your Cat converter was there, and if you had a factory air cleaner. IF you didn't, no safety sticker. Or a cop could look under your vehicle and if no Cat conveter, write you a ticket. Didn't make a rats butt if it worked or not, but it had to be there. So people would hollow out the Cat and it passed. Why? becasue it was there. So in your state, do they just go off the sniffer readings or do they check your timing and A/F ratio also??? If not, just get the NOx down and there you go. Like you said, 2 more years then it doesn't matter. Now in OK, we have nothing. No saftey inspections or nothing. All you have to have to get your annual registration tag is proof of insurance. Now this month, we just went high tech. The tag offices are online with the insurance companies. They actually verify your insurance is good on the comptuer. Not just a piece of paper saying its good. They did this because people would go sign up for a 6 month policy, make the first payment for a proof of insurance good for 6 months, then never make another payment unitl it was time to renew the tag again.

| Also to add about leaning out the carb, or advancing or retarding timing to get a "PASS" Before you go finding some info to fake out or lower NOx, do keep in mind, the other side of this can be just as bad too. So if you retard timing for example to reduce NOx, that may get your NOx right, but then make you fail on HC (hydrocarbons) or CO (Carbon Monoxide). So keep that balance in mind too. Many times people think leaning out the carb will fix all worries. Sure it helps, but also what can happen then, you get it to lean, you can cause a lean misfire and that will run your HC thru the roof.

| Thanks for clearing that up. Apology accepted! Glad I wasn't adding to your non-reponders frustration. I have enjoyed very much reading the related info. I appreciate the additional advice and things to consider. I use the truck mainly for hauling building supplies for my projects, yard stuff, small yard machines, etc. so it doesn't have to be passed by my birthday since I have a car to commute to work in (it passed). They will just charge me a surcharge past my Bday. I hope to get time to work on it this weekend, weather permitting. I'll let you know what I find. |

| Thanks. I'm a bit spread in all directions right now. Hotrodpc, the answer to your question about Georgia inspections is that for an old vehicle like this they just use a sniffer at two different speeds on the rollers, 15mph and 25mph. Then they check the gas cap for ability to hold pressure. That's it! |
