| How can you tell if the transmission's Torque converter is locking up or not. Is there a way to test if it is or not.

| Ok I am confused. I guess I thought you can tell if it locks up by RPMs and if mine has a switch where would that be located at? Thanks.

| You could try this. Hold a dead steady speed of say 45mph and note the reading on the tach. Keeping the speed steady press the brake pedal with your left foot, enough to turn the brake lights on but not enough to apply the brakes. If the tach jumps a few hundred revs then the lockup is working, if no change in tach reading then the lockup is not working. |

| What Case said up there. ^^^ But if pay real close to attention, you might even notice it. It would be like shifting into 5th gear.

| Ok I tried that way of pressing the brake pedal after getting to a cruising speed of 45 just to trip the switch but I saw no noticeable change in RPMs how much does it jump couple hundred RPMs? I know about 3+years ago after I installed my tach. I could cruise at 65 MPH at 1800 RPM now I am at 65/2000. Does that sound about right if it is locking up 65/1800?

trust me on this , if your converter wasn't locking up your trans would toast it self , anything can make a difference in rpm from wind to low air in your tires . shd | |

| The higher the speed you do the test the more the revs should jump. Try it again at 50mph or 55 and the tach should jump a couple of hundred revs if the lockup is working. Or to put it another way the more accel pedal you will have to give it to maintain the same speed. Last edited by Case 7230; 10-21-2009 at 01:54 PM. Reason: more info |

| I am curious what you are reffering to SHD. I think you are talking about something I am not aware of. There are situation where you TC will not lock up but your trans is fine. You could lose voltage to your TC lock up switch, the switch could fail etc etc. If his test did not work, and he used to cruise at 1800 before and now its 2000. I am thinking he is not locking up anymore. But why would that toast the converter?
