New member, Just bought a 97 Z71, Questions!

Hi everyone New member here.

I just picked up a 97 1500 Z71. A theft recovery. scored it for 1k. Anyway, theres no key. I dont really want to go to GM and have a key made (guessing 300+) So I just want to get it running until I can either get a key or buy a new column. Anyone ever had to do this or know how to? I dont care about the column (i'll probably be buying a new one), so whatever I have to break/bust/scratch is fine.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help!

Ummm... No.

There's a big difference between an ignition switch and an ignition lock cylinder. You ask for an ignition switch and that's what they'll give you, the switch that the lock cylinder activates when you put the key in and turn it.

Also, in order to replace the cylinder on those models you have to have the key in it before you can push down the button that holds it in place. Now, IIRC, it doesn't have to be the right key (one that will turn) but there does have to be a key in there, so if you have another key from another GM, that will insert into the lock, give that a try.

Oh, and any good locksmith can cut you a key for that truck for about $45. You don't have to go to the dealer since the PASSLOCK II anti-theft keys weren't used until later on.

I guess I should have mentioned that the ignition switch was also not connected, it was busted off from underneath the tumbler. Good new Is I was able to get a GM key in and put a pair of vice grips on it and break it to turn forward. Then, I just pushed down in the little hole and it slid out. Not sure what to do with the ignition box though, I know if I bridge 2 connections the dash lights, fuel pump, and transfer case all seem to get power.

See picture: This is the little box I was talking about. If I bridge the circled terminals, the dash lights, etc all come on. Im guessing that the tumbler activates something that bridges some of these terminals to avtivate the starter and everything else ?

ouch, that ain't fixable! there should be little springs and such in that box. you need a new one and they run around $150 if i remember from the last time i bought one. the little button and wires is your buzzer for when you leave the keys in the ignition.

Sounds and looks like you a bit of a headache there, but you scored on the truck so its worth it. BB says its not a Passlock, I was thinking it was. I'll take BB's word for it that its not. Be glad it isn't Passlocked or Transponder keyed.
