That fact that it is 2wd I would look into what 99GMC suggested. Check all the steering components to see if they're loose. Is your truck lifted???

I had the intermediate steering shaft replaced in both an 03 Avalanche and an 04 Crew Cab 1500, for knocking and popping noises. Being we don't theyear of this vehicle, that may not matter.

lien is on a distinguished road
Sounds familiar, GM intermediate steering shaft. Needs grease. GM has it's 3rd eplace ment part out to fix the problem, original--replacement--now modified replacement.
companies that provide off road 4wd sport products have a few to offer $2-300.00, look on line for GM intermediate shaft replacement for some good tips

Yes, Lien, I here GM is not wanting to replace them now, they just want to fill the cup with grease and seal it at the joint so the shaft does not slide around on the pin. I was big enough and ugly enough, I made them put the new style on my 2004 since I knew about the problem from my 03. I wasn't settling for Regreasing. I also had an 05 and it worked like a charm, and never needed the replacement, so I assume by 05 the problem had been rectified in manufacturing.
Lien you must be new. Welcome to the Forum. You need to go visit Introductions - Truck Forum threads and post one.
