If this only occurs during tight turns at slow speeds, probably your hubs are locked.

They aren't supposed to be (locked) - while driving on dry pavement.

I agree with Chengny if it is 4x4.

I have a 4X4 and had the same knocking you describe in your steering wheel column, It could be a dry spline in the steering rod spline connection between the firewall and steering box (it has a spline) if you can't find anything wrong with your hubs, try greasing that.

There is a grease kit you can get from the dealer, it has a special attachment for greasing the spline on your steering column, you disconnect your steering rod just before the steering box and attach this grease attachment and grease it....no more knocks for me!

I'm no mechanic, just sounds like you have the same problem I had, its irritating

By all means, check the hubs like everyone in here (with way more knowledge than I have) but if there appears to be no problem with them, check out the spline in the steering column, keep in mind that you have to buy this special grease attachment to grease it up, there is no way you can grease the spline without it, the attachment is designed to help push the grease into the area you need without it squirting all over the place and making a mess, its cheap and worth it, I've done mine once in the 7 years that I've had my truck

Let us know what you come up with

Brian
