Strange squeaking noise

On my 1997 GMC C1500 when ever I start my truck after it sits for a few hours it starts to squeak as I drive. It stops after a mile or when the truck heats up enough, but I took it in to have it looked at. The repair man told me that it was gone, but the squeak came back after a few days. What is causing that noise. I thought it was the fan belt, but I don't know. Please help.

Sounds like a belt to me. Try some belt dressing

This is a common problem that you have to watch out for. You can drive and drive on the squeaking and a lot of times it will just get worse. Open your hood while it's squeaking and make sure ALL the pulleys are moving at the same speed. Sometimes a bearing in your alternator i.e. will go out and freeze or minimize the rotations of the pulley, and sooner or later you're gonna break your belt, and be stuck with no coolin system.

This isn' always the problem though, so it could be something as simple as your belt could be too tight/loose,or just dirty.

Good luck!!!

For starters never use belt dressing!! If it is inconsistent then first check your belt tensioner, and idler pulley. How many miles are on the truck, if close to 100,000 is it the original belt. If so it probably needs to be replaced. If you can't find anything there take it to a shop and have them test the alternator while the vehicle is running. If it is something in the alternator say a bearing or bushing doing a load test on the alternator will help point you in the right direction.

Sorry I haven't been here for a while. School and homework really drain the energy out of you. Well this week my alternator finally gave out at nearly 100,000 miles. Also a coolant fiting was found that broke when it was touched. Both parts were replaced, but the squeak still remains. It only squeaks when the truck has sat overnight. It only squeaks when you first start moving and you step on the accelerator. After a few miles it stops squeaking for the rest of the day. Is this nothing? Please help!

Has to be either a belt, or a bearing going bad in pulley driven component. try the belt first as it is cheap and probally time to replace it anyway. While you have it off check your pulleys for free movement.
