Engine ID

Howdy all, first time here. I just got a 1984 GMC 1/2 ton 4x4 Sierra Classic. The truck origonaly had a 6.2L diesel. It now however has a gas V-8, I'm told it is a 350. I have tried to find the engine ID online but im not having any luck.

I was wondering if anyone can decode this for me or sugest a good web site. The ID pad infront of the pass. head reads; V0104TPA.

Thanks for the help.

I cannot decode that but if you can get the casting numbers off the transmission mounting boss on the drivers rear of the block, i can tell you what year and what size motor it is. Look down behind the drivers head and it will have some numbers cast into the block just forward of where the transmission bolts up to the block

I think I know where the numbers are on the rear of the block, but I cant get back there to see them. Maybe Im just lazy to dig deep enough in there to see them.

The reason Im trying to see if this really a 350 is because yesterday I had to tow a trailer about 200mi. The trailer was a 16ft. flat bed loaded with a riding mower and 35 1x6x12ft. deck boards. On top of getting terrible gas mileage (appx. 8mpg) I could barely hold 60mph. I would say I averaged more like 55 mph. I dont want to haul a trailer at 75 nor do I want to be infront of anyone who is. But I dont think that being able to go 60 is unreasonable.

Alittle more about the truck, the engine is TBI and truth be known I dont have a clue what the donor vehicle was. When i took the breather cover off I noticed that there is alot of dark black crud caked around some sort of ring that sits at the base of the breather case, and the injectors are coated with a brown tarnish. I am amazed that someone was able to hook up the wiring harness of the engine to the truck wiring. Has anyone ever done a diesel to gas TBI conversion befor? Now Im just rambling thanks for the help.

No your not rambling. Just posting, Sounds like its time for a fuel system clean up. I dont mean mechanic in a bottle, i mean the good cleaner you buy at NAPA and you run thru it instead of fuel with the right injector cleaning apparatus. My truck will pull my old 25 foot 5 th wheel at 75 all day with no troubles at all.I cant help you unless i have that info from behind the drivers side head looking straight down.
