1999 GMC Jimmy Ignition/Key Problem

I have a 1999 Jimmy 4.3L. The key would not come out of the ignition. I popped a little plastic cover off the bottom side of the steering column and stuck a small screw driver into the whole. This released something and the key will (turn) so key will come out of ignition. Wife took to dealer......(mistake # 1) and they told her something about $190.00 part and or some wires broken?

Anyone have this problem before? Any help wpuld be appreciated

something similiar happened to my dads truck, it's a '92. The key wouldn't turn either way, so it wouldn't turn off or turn on after I pulled the fuse. He had to get a new ignition, cost around a hundred or so. As for the broken wires the screwdriver thing might have something to do with that. Hate to say it but sounds like the dealer may be right .

HI, I have the same truck, with the same problem. The way I fix the problem is , open the boot around the tranny stick shift, and press in on a white piece of plastic on the passenger side of the stick, this will release the key. Also I have found that if you let the car sit for about 10 minutes, try turning the car on again, the key will go to the off position, and release the key.
