Timing Belt

I was looking over the recommended maintainace for my truck and they are saying the timing belt should be changed at 100,000. I'm over that now and i was wounderin how necessary or hard it is to do on a '96 vortec 5.7? My car’s belt broke on me last fall and, fortunately it didn't wreck the engine. What do ya think?

For starters you have a timing chain, and not a belt. As far as I know it is not common to change unless you have jumed time. I wouldnt see it to be necessary.

Hey guys... I did mean timing chain. When i put timing belt i was thinking of my car, so sorry for the confusion. Somewhere i read that it is recomended that it be replaced at 100k ofr general maintainace.

Nope, i'm still talkin about the timing chain. As far as i can tell though, the general concesus is it's not necessary. As for the belt though, i replaced it a long time ago. I like to think my truck is in pristine condition.

yeah there really is no need to change the timing chain. not unless you got a few 100K miles then I would think about it.

Timing Chain

Now, I've heard that the chain can stretch (thermal expansion) and make it difficult to maintain good timing after a while.

Has anyone heard this?
