Coolant Flush Problems

My truck ('99 Sierra) recently hit 100,000 miles so I underwent a coolant drain, flush, and replace. I purchased a Chiltons manuel a while back to assist me in the numerous processes to complete for 100,000 maintenance. After I began draining the coolant from the radiator (through the tube), it said to remove the drain plugs on the cylinder block. I located the place on my truck where the manuel said they would be, but on one side the cylinder block was blocked by other items and on the other side there was a sort of inward hex bolt looking thing, something that I did not have the tool to remove.

Does anyone know where these plugs are or are they even necessary to remove to preform a flush? Any assistance in this process would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Andrew
