Question Identifying Transmission

Hello,

Not sure if the auto tranny in the truck is stock or not so I don't want to go off the books. Does anyone know where I look on the transmission to identify it? The reason I ask is because I have to rebuild the 402 engine in the truck but I am thinking about replacing it with a 350 crate motor and I need to know if I can resuse the bellhousing, etc etc. Thanks in advance.

Patrick

look at the pan. if i remember right, there should be 16 or 17 bolts. correct me if im wrong someone. 17 bolts are the 750r without overdrive and the 16 is the 750r with overdrive. i believe that the 350 tranny is going to have 16 bolts on a fairly square pan. might want to make sure that is right before much of anything though. its been a couple years

Thank you for the info. I was just thinking to myself though that if I swap out to a 350 I'll need to buy headers, intake, etc etc. Now I'm thinking it is better just to swap out the motor. Just was trying to save some gas. I guess I still have some planning to do. Thank you for the info because it is still good to know what I have.

Thanks,

Patrick

i do agree with you there. i priced a rebuild and turned around to price a new crate and they were close enough for me to spend the extra just to have a new block. but that is also turning my old block in for a core. wish the best of luck to you.

If the pan is square it is a 700R, if the pan is square with one corner cut on the back end it is a 350. 400 pans look wierd, kinda hard to explain. If you can snap a picture of it we can tell you.

The Th400 pans

are shaped like the state of texas. I have one behind my 350 in a K2500.

Go to summits website and look up transmission. They have alot of pan gaskets and aftermarket pans pictured. Compare to your and there you have it.

How many speeds? If it is a 3 speed then it sounds like you got a th400.
