Question Please Help Me With My Exhaust

Hey I'm new to the forums and don't know much about trucks. I drive a 96 GMC Sierra 1500 and am looking to upgrade the exaust. I don't need anything extreme, I just want my truck to have that deep growl. What would be the cheapest way to achieve this and how much would it cost? My only requirement is that it pass smog.

Thanks

go with some 40 series flowmasters and that will give you that growl that you are looking for if that in fact is all that you really want to do.

Thanks for the reply bradrhale, I repped you for it. How much will it cost to have it installed?

its all depending on who does it. if you decide to do the work, really not that hard, all you will be out is the cost of the mufflers. if you would rather have someone do it for you, check around first. cant tell you how much they charge because i have never had someone work on exhaust for me. someone else here might know a ballpark figure. i know that summitracing has stuff that will fit your truck for under 200 though.

Yup I agree...
I have a 40 series Flowmaster on my truck (02 Dodge Ram)... thats it... its deep and aggressive and I love it.
The muffler and installation... I think my final total was like $130. Muffler was like $80 if I remember correctly. I bought my muffler from Summit Racing. Its WAY cheaper then buying from Flowmaster themselves.

for some odd ball reason, i woulda thought that it would have been higher than that to get aftermarket exhaust put on a truck. 130 is not bad considering. maybe ill have to stop doing it myself and go find someone good here in town.

Most muffler shops stock Flowmaster or DynaFlow mufflers. Install labor is the question, $20 to $40 is common. Flowmaster makes 20, 30, & 40 series mufflers with 20 series being their full race (read LOUD) muffler and 40 being their quietest. I assume you still have your cat converter on which will quiet the system to a good degree. A 40 series will give you a nice sound and will not "growl" in your ear at highway speeds after an hour. Most are welded on and takes a wire-feed welder able to weld aluminized pipe, a common oxy/acetlyene torch won't really weld it nice. And of course if you want MORE growl you can go with the 30 series Flowmaster. The DynaFlow or DynaMax is muffler similiar to a Flowmaster, gives a similiar sound, but in my experience doesn't give the life of a Flowmaster. I owned a muffler store for 5 years, put on my share of mufflers, and now I let someone else do it. They have the rack, the cut off saws, the swedges and benders, and the welder ready to weld, just not worth my time to do it now when they can install a muffler in 30 minutes or less. Hope this helps.

Thanks I repped every1. So do you all think I should get a regular 40 series, a super 40, or the 40 Series Delta Flow? I want something with a nice deep growl but don't need to be setting off car alarms or anything. And is it correct that ALL I need is the muffler and I'll be able to achieve this deep sound? I was thinking I was going to have to get a whole new exhaust system .

you can get the sound with just the muffler, but you can help the engine breath better by upgading to a slightly larger pipe or duals. it just depends on what you have a budget for.

I have a 2006 Silverado and had flowmaster 40 put on today at a hole-in-the-wall shop for only $200 labor included. Sounds great. I just hope that it really does help with fuel mileage.
