1982 1/2 ton 2WD - pitman arm not fitting on streering pump all the way

I recently installed new pitman arms on my 82 1/2 ton. I could not get the pitman to slide all the way up on the splined shaft on the steering pump. It looks like its only about half way on. The nut and lock washer are as tight as I could get them even with an impact. Is there a way to get it to slide up the rest of the way. I've had one buddy say that's just the way some of them are because they are tapered and another told me to remove it and try again.

I assume you mean the pitman arm it not sliding on the steering gear all the way and if you have the nut tight thats it. It is a tapered spline and it only goes on so far and stops. If you have the lock washer and nut on and maybe a thread or 2 showing below them its on. U can also slide down the rubber protector down and over the splines when you get it on.
