Red face 92 Jimmy 4X4...need some help

OK guys, Just bought a 92 Jimmy that has a few issues. I'm close to getting the lighting legal (missing lights/biezles etc). Dad's been working on it with me but he's a Dodge/Ford type person. I'll list the things, you all get back to me on it and maybe dad can fix em:

1. 4 x 4 lights (lo/hi) will come on, I hear a solinoid on the right side but 4 x 4 will not engage (fwd drive wheels). Drives fine in 4 x 2, shifts good (auto trans).

2. Heater motor fan runs...no select for defrost etc. The highest fan setting kills the fan. I cannot direct heat where I need it and since I live in Michigan, this could be a real issue by the end of the month.

3. Engine runs a little rough at first but smooths right out after about 3 minutes (auto choke maybe?).

I just bought this thing and I think it's had a minor front end collision because it has an "S-10" grill on it (hence putting new light fixtures on it) and there's signs of anti-freeze had been splashed around the underside forward area. I don't see any major signs of damage under the vehicle up front. All skid plates and splash guards seem to be in tact. I know there could possibly be severed vac hoses or wires that I'm not seeing. Once I take care of the above and replace the drivers side front fender, I think it'll be an outstanding little vehicle to drive back and forth to nursing college. Since dad works on it with me, I'll be OK. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

you might want to check your wire plugs at the back of the heater/ac control panel. since you say that you cannot alternate back and forth, it sounds like something is unplugged. you also might want to check all your fuses to make sure everything is cool since you just acquired this jimmy. as for the engine running a little rough, i dont think that i would worry about that too much. i think that you have TBI and dont have what you would call a conventional "auto choke". with its age, it will begin to show its age. check and change all your fluids, do a tune up on it. every time i buy a vehicle, ill change the plugs, wires, oil, tranny fluid, all the usual 50k mile tuneup stuff. good rule of thumb because most of the time, you dont know what the previous owner has done to it.

sounds like you may need a new actuater for the 4 wheel drive. my blazer also idled fast for the first 30 seconds or so. if it is lasting longer than that then i would check for a vacum leak around the tbi, they are nortorious for this problem.

I have a Sonoma that has 4x4 issues alot here are the main cause's:
I'm sorry head of time for not knowing offical names for the stuff i'm talking about...

Sounds like the the same problem your having is what I had, you can hear the 4x4 try to engage but it won't. Take your battery out, then the metal plaform that the battery sits on. There is something to do with the 4x4 under that, sorry don't know it's name, there is a vacume line that goes from that to the actual thing that enguages the 4x4 down infront of the transmission, make sure the vacume line is good, in my case it had melted through.

Below the glove box on the passanger side is a box which is the PCM, ECM, computer ... whatever it's called sorry. Well alot of the time with mine is the connector gets dusty and the 4x4 stops working. Just disconnect it and blow it and where it plugs into out real good.

Hope this helps and doesn't confuse, also get a haines or chilton manual from a parts store for it, I call it my truck bible because it's save my butt alot.

yes the acuater is controled by vacuum. if the acuater moves freely then i would start chaseing vacum lines as mentioned above.
