I'm a newbie and I need help :)

Hi all, thanks for allowing me to add myself to your forum, lord knows I need help. My husband just HAD to have another pickup..ok I wanted a new play toy too. Anyways, it's an 85 GMC pickup shortbord with a rebuilt 350 that was not the original in the truck. We are needing to find out the year of the motor, someone has said that the color of the valve covers can make a difference (?) so they are orange....any suggestions please. Thank you.

Between 8/23/76 - 9/7/76 the color changed from orange to blue but in the early '77 some of the engines was still orange. Hope this help.

mortec . com can tell you anything about it by using the cast numbers. They have a sheet on their web page.

Like Nate said the casting # is the only way to tell what year the block is. They are located on the bellhousing boss behind the driver side cylinder head.
