Now I figure I can get this to a more exact number and then reposition the Pitman arm on the steering gear to center the travel, but my question is, can I then center the steering wheel on the shaft? Some wheels I know only fit the shaft in one position. Basic problem is I have moved from a F--- product to the GMC and it is a work in progress!!

I have a feeling that your fix will not work. I belive that the steering sector shaft has a flat on it, and will only allow the pitman arm to go on one way. I am trying very hard to remember, but that sounds right. Any way, you should really find the source of the problem, instead of coming up with a solution as you mentioned. Did this just end up this way, or has the truck been like that since you purchased it? Is it possible that the steering limit bolt has run itself out on one side of the truck? Or maybe the left side is fine, could it be that the same bolt is missing on the right side? This would cause it to turn too far to that side, making you think that it is not turning well to the left. Worth a look.

| sounds to me like you might have some bad tie rod ends.

Ok, tie rods are definitely not correct! Right side is adjusted way out and left is the opposite. Also, can the steering wheel be 180 degrees out? It appears that the geometry of the steering is just about 180 off. About 1/2turn of steering wheel more to the right than the left. There do not appear to be any "stops" on the linkage anywhere, so I am led to believe the total travel is built into the steering box? If so, then someone has maladjusted the tie rod ends to get the steering wheel centered correctly? Could the "rag" joint be 180 off and be the basic cause of the problem?? MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! No snow here, but makes it better to work in the shop!!!

Steering issue 1. tie rod end on the right side was an inch longer than the left. It was bottomed out in the sleeve! Cut the offending inch off and reset. Now 3 turns lock to lock and 1 1/2 turns from center each way. 2. Once the turns to lock were correct and wheel centered, it was 180 degrees off. Wheel was upside down. I was able to disconnet the intermediate shaft at the top, rotated the wheel 189 and put the shaft back together and all is well. HELP . It steers fine now, but is a little bit of a problem to keep it from wandering
