Towing wiring

Okay. Since my 99 Sierra has been through 6 different owners, I have come to look at the towing wires and the trailer light wires. All of them have been cut, stripped, and then some.

First question. How do I go about sorting the wires to the extent where I can use them?
Here is a picture of the hitch trailer light wiring:

Here is a picture of the wiring for the 6-24 volt exterior port

Second question. Is this the right connection I need for the Hitch trailer light wiring? If not, what do I need?

If this helps any, this is a picture of the light. That is what I will be installing in the Hitch reciever

Is it possible and/or advisable to butcher the extension wires and wire the truck's wires and then connect it to the light using the correct connector from the extension connector?

Use which ever connector fits you needs. This site might help:

That website that dstrick32 posted is great for the wiring schematics, could have used that a few weeks ago myself. One thing you need to do though, is make sure you connect a ground wire to your harness. If you don't have that ground wire, all your lights will act really strange....trust me! It doesn't have to be anything fancy though, you could connect it directly to your frame if you need to.
Another thing, obviously you can't put a square ped into the round hole. They sell an adapter piece for your hitch light harness to your truck connector, it runs about $5. However, the adapter piece will stick out a little and might look tacky on just a hitch light. If you don't like that idea, you could always go get a new harness for your lights that match your hitch light harness, its the 4 way flat connector, they only run $15 to $20.

Thanks

I have an extension cable, would it help if I butchered the wires and used the harness of it instead of running 5 more bucks?

If you are talking about bypassing the mounted truck harness receiver, it's really a matter of your own preference, but if you ever plan on towing anything you might wanna just get that adapter piece I mentioned earlier.

I'm not going to tow anything any time soon, I'm just installing the light/break light that goes into the hitch reciever.

have you went under the truck to see if there is a plug in to see if you can buy the orignal wire harness for it. it should plug into your truck harness and replace your trailer plug. look on top of your spare tire that's where mine is on my 03 1500.
