Pitman Arm on 1992 GMC

I'm attempting to replace the pitman arm on my 1992 GMC truck(1500 2 WD),I have the old one off does any one have any tips for putting on the new one,I have it on but getting it all the way up on the spline threads
is a pain I've been using cheater bar to tighten it,thinking the nut would draw it together, but it feels like I'm going to snap something.Input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Phill

It doesn't necessarily have to go the entire length up the spline threads. It is a tapered fit. Some arms go on further than others.

Impact gun is the best way to put those puppies on. But, if you don't have a gun, and you're replacing it with the same stock arm, you should be able to see a line on the shaft where the old one was. It'll be clean below the line and dirty above it; just get the new one up to the line and you should be good to go.

Also if you have a cheap impact it won't do the job but as Bernie wrote look where the old one left a mark and you should be OK. The reason is the wife bought me some Mickey Mouse impact and it wouldn't have the strength to tighten stuff up right like putting in wheels studs so I bought me a Sears impact that did it.
