Unhappy Transmission quit. (HELP)

Just had my transmission replaced on 10/10/06 with a rebuilt one that I bought on Ebay well I had noticed that while placing it in reverse that it would take a little while like 3 seconds to move well I had also notice a sound coming from under my truck and it felt like it was missing then yesterday right before it shelled out it felt like it was missing bad and boom I heard the trans blow up so I had it towed home well of coarse the warrenty is over but the guy will rebuilt another one and include a torque converter for $400.00 dollars that's including s/h to Houston, Texas or should I pick up a transmission from a buddys totaled GMC truck for $100.00 dollars and install it what would you guys do im just afraid that the rebuilt transmission will shell out again in 6 months should I take a chance on the one from my buddy it was running fine?? Thanks! GMCTRUCKS
PS-Also the guy that I bought transmission from said that I should get a trans cooler because they get real hot.

sounds like the old one ran out of tranny fluid. i would be afraid of using a tranny from a wrecked truck when you can get a rebuild and converter for 400. what kinda tranny do you have in your truck?? as for the tranny cooler, as long as you dont do alot of pulling, that thing aint gonna hurt without one. those things are primarrily used when alot of pulling and torque is going through that tranny.

first off, assuming you had enoug fluid, you got hosed. I would not buy a transmission from any ebay dealer without a warranty. plain and simple... I would not trust the ebay guy again, he should stand behind his work. I would get your original tranny rebuilt by someone who knows what there doing.

Trans

It's a 4L60E. Now the seller from Ebay was going to warrenty it out because reverse wasn't working correct but now that it's all tore up on the inside he's going to charge me $400.00 dollars and the factory trans was so tore up that it couldn't even be used, now im wondering if I should just get the trans from my buddy rebuilt it and buy or use the converter that comes with it im wondering how long converters last and I don't use my truck for pulling I did haul two washers in it for about 350 miles but that wouldn't have over heated it? Thanks! GMCTRUCKS

The 4L60E is a good trans. It, like any other auto can get hot, and all should have a cooler. That being said, it sounds like you have had some issues with this transmission since you installed it.That would make me suspicious of the individual that built it in the first place.
You know Quiznos sandwich shops state that if you are not satisfied with a sandwich that they make, they will give you a free one. Think about that for a minute. If you were not happy with the first one, how in the world are you going to be happy with a second one, even if it was for free????? They could not make one that satisfied you once, why does anyone think that given a second shot, things would be any different?
If the person that built this trans was has already acknowledged that there was a problem with the trans, and is willing to "help you out" by charging you money to fix something that was probably not your fault in the first place, then this is probably not someone that deserves more business. I would never pay to get the short end of the stick twice! Once, maybe, if there was an honest mistake, and a mechanic stands behind his work, then so be it, things happen, but I would never have someone provide me a service, and charge me to make it right after they did not do the job right from the beginning.
That guy is asking you to spend another $400.00 for what? To fix something that he should have done right from the beginning. Even if the trans survived for a while, you stated that it was not right, and reverse was not working correctly. That means that thing should have been fixed a long time ago. Perhaps reverse not working correctly, and the eventual failure of the trans, might be related. Why should you pay for that?
$400.00 is a good deal for a re-build, but if this guys work the first time is any indication of how things are going to be again, why put yourself through the nonsense? If the guy was a stand up guy, and stood behind his work, he would not be charging you at all. You may have to eat the install costs, and maybe shipping, but never the cost to repair a mistake.
